Default Tuning an R56 FJCW - 17th August 2015, 09:11 PM

Hi all, I'm fast approaching being 2.5 years without a mini.

I would really love to return to the fold as have never quite managed to rid myself of the itch of having a MINI

I've been looking at all sorts of different cars but keep coming back to FJCWs

I would love to have one but I feel that the standard 211 BHP might feel somewhat under powered coming from my soon to be 290-300bhp Astra with 350lbs of torque.

Although tuning is not something that I intend to do immediately I would like my options open for if I fancy it and once any warranty (if any) runs out.

From what I've briefly looked at I fancy

milltek down pipe and sports cat, Airtec Intercooler and a map to suit.

With obviously coils for lows and handling.

In terms of the power mods, who's done what on here?

Also how have people's N14 engines coped? Are the N18s worth the extra cash?

All opinions welcome!!

Thanks in advance

Ry

Thems the right mods mate - don't forget to get it breathing better. Most now go for the AEM but I'm personally still sceptical after some of the fitment issues.
N18 is DEFINITELY the way to go if you can afford it, they aren't displaying anywhere near the issues the 14's do.
Manic Motorsport maps are highly regarded 1320 and Lohen do them. If I was doing it all again that's where I'd go

Cheers Ian, Looks like I'm may hold out for a nice N18. Tbh I had a feeling someone would say that. Had an N14 previously and although I never once had Engine trouble or noise the paranoia of chain stretch was too much to handle lol.

I had forgotten about the induction kit. AEM certainly looks like a good bit of kit but a fair few quid for what it is. Any other options? KN or Alta?

I have a coupler of custom mappers in mind eventually. One of which I'm using on the Astra for Stage 3 in October so I'll ask him about it then although 1320 do look a good option.

In terms of engine internals I seem to keep reading the FJCW is the better option as it has forged Pistons over cast ones like in the MCS?

If not I don't really want to get into the realms of upgrading internals but is there any need for that?

ITG filter looks a good choice...it's the one I'd go for.

If you go N18, I don't think the AEM is worth the money. With a JCW Airbox just a decent Panel filter will see you through.

First I've heard that FJCW's had forged internals though? I've just got a dodgy old N14 though so...

Thanks chaps.

I would probably go panel. Maybe KN. always preferred cotton over foam.

But good to know that the jcw airbox should suffice.

With regards to the internals though I heard it was Pistons only not rods

I'd recommend the Manic Maps too. They are pricey but seem to get the most out of the cars safely. I love mine!

Just looking at these now. They just look like generic hand held flash maps??

Have to say I would be looking at a Live road custom map more than anything

Can't "Live Map" a MINI with a factory ECU. Be careful who tells you that.

They are are 'Generic' map but read into them more and you'll see why people pay the money. A lot of time and money was invested into them by Manic Motorsport.
