Default Gp2 numbers - 20th August 2013, 04:58 PM

Heard a rumour that the gp2's number that you call up and get is a total random one and not a pre designated one as stated.

As GP 1 owners know their cars were made in sequence all with their own unique number. The GP 2 as you know was never issued a number however if you called they would give you one, the rumour goes they randomly handed these out. The worse bit is they were not then struck off so the potential is for more than one particular number for these cars

Anyone else think, if true, this is disgraceful.

Thought MINI would have followed the GP 1 route and issued each of the GP 2's with its own unique number

Bit of surprise they haven't

US ones had an irrelevant number of 1-500 iirc, then you can give your chassis number to mini and they find the true build number. Bit daft that the US allocated number and build number are different

They do it so they all hold the same residuals surely.....

Other number 0001 would be worth more than 4999

mini has gone.......I will be back!

They always keep the first one anyway.

Apparently they're now double checking the build slots and IF the owner requests a number they're being told what build number they had from the 2000 built.
Ie. 0264 would be the 264th one off the line.

And yes the US ones are numbered with a special stars n striped decal from 1-500, I'm not sure how they allocated the numbers over there, I am aware of a number of US owners who asked if they could have a number that matched their GP1. I'm not sure if they got them though

MINI is providing accurate production sequence numbers for anyone who asks. Many GP2 owners have added the number to their roof using the standard GP font and it looks great.

The decision to omit roof numbers on the GP2 was a mistake. It was the decision of product planners. MINI claims that it was due to certain markets having superstitions about specific numbers.

MINI USA responded to local market demand by designing and adding roof numbers. They were assigned in sequence of production for the US cars, 0001-0500. It would have been far better if they simply started worldwide from GP2001 and continued the sequence. In 2006 it was a clever way to bring a uniqueness to cars which were otherwise identical.

None of this changes the fact that the GP2 is still a fantastic little car.

If you were a GP1 owner, you could request the same US roof number on your GP2. This worked for anyone with a number lower than GP0500. If you had a GP1 with a high roof number, MINI USA provided owners with a matching GP2 roof sticker encloses in a glass display frame.

There were just a handful (a few dozen?) who took this option.
