Should I buy a fJCW R56?!

Currently flirting with getting another mini as it's been too long without one... but my last r56 stung me so I am cautious of getting another!

Have things changed significantly to mean the common r56 problems are manageable?

What are the recommended mods these days? Just in case things have moved on...

My thoughts are:
- n18 engine so 2013+ iirc(?)
- kw v1
- adjustable control arms
- wheels (bbs RCs most likely)
- sports cat / stealthcat
- front mount (which?)
- tune

Thoughts on mods above and anything I've missed or suggested alternatives are always welcome in case things have moved on and I've missed it...

A little torn between

A) saving cash for more mods and get a n14 version, but potential maintenance issues?

B) spend more on a n18 but with less money for mods but potentially more reliable(?)

C) splash on a GP2 and basically just remap + DP only, maybe wheels too...

So in short:

- is an r56 worth another chance?

- if so, which options would you recommend from the above options. I set out?

Exciting prospect to be looking at minis again...... 👍👍👍

Cheers
Keano.

Late fJCW or GP2 or just don't bother. Like you say, IC, DP, manic map, done.

Have a look at ST XTA coilovers for it. Same as a V2 without Inox, but has adjustable front topmonts and straight springs.

Or if you don't want adjustable damping, Bilstein B14 will give you a similar setup to GP2 coilovers.

If you can afford GP2 you'd be daft not to though. If I was ever to buy another Mini (not that I would now) I'd have a GP2.

And peel the stickers off, obviously.

And get them wheels off...

It's around 5k more than an n18 jcw from what I can see - mods to the fJCW would come in at or less than that and be faster than the stock GP... so I am still a little uncertain overall. Hmmm

You still got your awesome r53 mate?! Gimme!!!! Lol

They are only around 3k ish less so not worth the saving from what you're saying...

Still miss the R53! I think Rigsey is selling it in November if I remember correctly....

I'm lucky to have a good comparison, my mum has a 63 plate fully loaded JCW and I've got the GP with DP and Ohlins - the delivery of the S/JCW is a lot more torquey lower down and makes it 'feel' faster but they don't have the appetite for the top end that the GP has.
It's what puts me off about an out of the box Manic map as they all seem to revert to a big torque spike lower down whereas the GP is nicely linear (as linear as a turbo can be I suppose...)

The GP seems to have reached its point in the market now so residuals wise should be ok... I may be selling for an ///M of some form soon though ...

Absolutely you should!
I purchased my 2013 FJCW in May 2016 and it's been fantastic.
Now, I did consider buying a GP2, however, after weighing up the pros + cons of each, I went for the R56 FJCW.
I felt things like rear seats, half decent H/K hifi, rear screen wipe etc were a must for me.
My FJCW is way fast enough for me and the added 'creature comforts' make it ideal. :tl:
