Default Mini Cooper JCW? - 11th October 2014, 09:11 PM

So I had the opportunity to buy a MC for not a great deal of money, when I was told about it, it he woman said it was a JCW cooper, naturally I figured that JCW did some sort of kit for the cooper. Get there, and basically it looks as if someone has stuck the odd badge on it and that was the end of that.

HOWEVER, look under the bonnet, there's a little plaque that says 'JCW TUNING KIT NO. 406' so is there actually more to it than someone buying badges? The plaque looks fairly real and doesn't seem to be glued down poorly?

There have been a number of tuning kits for the 1st gran Coopers. To start with there was the 130bhp kit, this I believe was then superseded by another around 120bhp. This in turn was replaced by the JCW sound kit, which claimed about 118bhp but was really more about the sound the car made. All had a plaque as you describe, a silver JCW rocker cover, a performance filter, a remap and an exhaust. The sound kit had an engraved exhaust tip (not sure about the others), while the 130/120 kit had a modified head.

The 120/130 kits were stopped when the Cooper S was released as they were quite pricey and not really economically viable against buying an MCS.

The sound kits had SK numbers on the plaque, as far as I know, so the car you're looking at May well have one if the original kits.

Thanks for the reply, but unfortunately the car has the usual gearbox issue, along with some other minor issues
