Will it be a case of just swapping it over for my original unit? Plug n play?

I'm afraid almost nothing in BMW world is plug and play. Even a new car battery will require coding in. If you can get it to fit physically you will undoubtedly have to visit Mini for it to be coded to the car or it just won't work.

Ah, kinda suspected this. So many electronics in them that seem to go through the head unit. Was worried there may be other stuff needed too such as amps/ modules etc?
