Default Engine Rattle / Loud - Is this sound normal? - 11th February 2017, 05:58 PM

Hi all,

Hoping to get some advice from some fellow mini drivers.

Over the past few weeks I feel like Iíve noticed the engine on my Mini Cooper R56 2010 (Justa Cooper 1.6 Petrol 65K on the clock) getting louder and louder, now this could just be my imagination as Iíve had a few people ask me if my car is a diesel given the noiseÖ

Iíve recorded a video of my car and hoping someone out there might be able to tell me if this is normal, or if itís not - what the problem could be?

I really hope this isnít the dreaded death rattle as Iíve heard its far less common in Coopers (compared to the MCS). Iíve heard this is mega bucks to fix?

All advice and input would be greatly appreciated

Thanks in advance!

also, just to add to this.. The video was filmed after the car had been driven for about 20 minutes and the engine allowed to warm up. Its worse on a cold start...

Thanks

That noise is the timing chain guide rails they are a common fail on all second gen engines.

I wouldn't drive it, the chain will jump teeth and ruin your engine I advise you get them replaced ASAP.

Thanks for the response, much appreciated.

Oh dear, i've been driving it like that for the last few weeks... luckily ive got it booked into the garage Tuesday anyway for something unrelated (thermostat housing leaking). Don't suppose you have any idea how much something like changing the guide rails should cost? just so I can brace myself! Is it a few hundred, or thousand type of job usually?

Thanks

Thanks for that. Well the count down begins. She is going into the garage (independent mini specialist) tomorrow for the thermostat housing, so will ask them to quote / investigate this too.

Honestly, its killing me the amount this car is costing me at the moment. As much as I love the mini, I almost just want to throw the towel in... between, this noise, coolant issues, spark plugs, and servicing, this month is costing me at least a grand to keep the mini going..

ah well fingers crossed thats it for the year..

Just a quick update on this.. In case anyone out there happens to come across this thread with the same problem..

The issue turned out to be a warn Poly V belt. It had lost most of its 'teeth/groves in one section and was causing the problem. It has been changed and the knocking noise has gone! Was a nice easy fix (£20 part and 30 minutes fitting).

Sound before belt change:

Sound after belt change:

I'm not 100% sure the chain isn't making any excess noise (feel free to let me know!) and may need replacing in the near future, the immediate problem of the knocking appears to have been resolved.

Thanks
