Default 2007 Cooper hazard light problems - 27th October 2017, 01:12 PM

Hi all

Got a 2007 Cooper and the hazard lights randomly come on and go off.

It has already had a new hazard switch installed, which didnt fix the problem, and then its come to me.

I have diagnosed it on a Delphi diagnostic PC and getting the following codes:

Instrument - A3A9 - Unknown fault code

Climate - E738 - Unknown Fault code

Central Body - JBE (Junction Box)(3 Fault codes)
- C914 - unknown fault code
- C80A - Unknown fault code
- C809 - Unknown fault code

Central Body - FRM (Footwell module) (2 Fault codes)
- 9CB2 - Potentiometer, headlight levelling control - Short circuit - Intermittent
- 932B - Switch, hazard warning

The boot is wet and I have done an internal fog test which has shown the boot seal failed - this has been ordered and will be replaced once arrives.

The car is currently inside drying out.

One thing I have noted is that sometime's if I close the drivers quite softly it will set the hazards off, if I then open and close the drivers a little firmer it will turn the hazards off - this doesn't happen all the time and if the hazards start randomly opening and closing the door seems to do nothing - they will then just turn themselves off after a random time.

A few other things I noted:

Driver and passenger door cavities had water in when I removed the lower grommets, not loads, but had water in all the same, but no fog came out of the door seals.

The boot courtesy light does not work - this could be a bulb as i haven't checked it yet - thought best to get the car dry and water tight before attempting any repairs.

Has anyone come across this before?

Not sure if the previous person put the car on diagnostics or just replaced the switch.

I have checked the earth strap on the LH side of the engine bay as you look at it, this had been rubbing on the suspension turret and rubbed through to bare metal so I have heat shrunk that and checked for continuity and all is fine, also checked the earth on the LH side of the bonnet, continuity was a bit hit and miss so I have also cleaned that one up and is all fine now.

As for the other's, I have not located them as yet as thought I would see if this is common fault or if is just one of those that needs tracking down.

Any help or advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to tM. On another forum, which Iím struggling to find, there was a similar thread on the hazard lights and corrosion on the fuse was to blame. Itís worth replacing it and giving the terminals a good clean.

Thanks for your reply zf44, I will check the fuse and report back.

One thing i noticed this morning..I managed to get the hazards flashing by gently closing the door but could not get them to turn off by closing the door a little firmer..I then pressed the hazard button and they turned off!!

Weird!!

Could someone confirm which fuse is for the hazards?

I have removed drivers footwell fuse box cover and I can not see a specific fuse for the hazards, I know in times gone passed these have been on the same circuit as the radio/horn/interior light circuit.

But...

F6 20A is for the radio
F14 10A is for the interior lights
F21 10A is for multi media system?

There is a description/location of all the fuses/relays on another forum but I think this is for the American market as the fuse numbers don't match the fusebox cover.

Anyone know if there is a description/location for the UK cars? I have searched forum but not found any threads.

The fuse for the hazard warning is usually linked to the radio. Don’t despair, the major concern is the water ingress which you are dealing correctly with.

I have removed fuse's:

F6 20A (radio diagram next to it) - hazards still come on randomly and can still be turned on and off via the button.

F11 10A (tv screen diagram next to it) - same results as above

F12 10A (what looks like stacked cd's diagram next to it) - As above

F14 10A (interior light diagram next to it) - As above

F21 10A (radio & tv screen diagram next to it) - As above

F44 20A (horn diagram next to it) - As above

F45 20A (tv screen diagram next to it) - As above

All the fuse's where in good condition and not corroded at all.

Bit baffled now as to which circuit the hazard lights are on.

Also, have a read of this. Culprits being the switch, although you replaced it, but shows you how to test, fuse or footwell module.

I have removed Fuse 8 and hazards still flash, I also removed Fuse 5 as this has the same window diagram as Fuse 8 and they still flash.

I have also removed Fuse 48 and 47 as these have the headlight and sidelight? diagrams but again hazards keep flashing.

The switch wouldn't turn them on or off this morning but will now so I will test the switch next.

I didn't fit the new switch - it went for MOT and failed on hazard switch fault - they have said a new switch was fitted - the fault went away for a week or 2 then returned and then the car came to me.

I think they have just replaced the switch and not actually fixed the problem that has broken the switch - which I am hoping is water ingress.

I will report back once I have tested it.

Would still like to find out which circuit it is on though.

With regard to the boot seal - which came today - is it just a matter of fitting it then pulling the rubber out to seat the seal? Like the olden days when we used para cord to fit windows and seals?

I can't seem to find an answer.

Iím still persevering on the fuse.

On the boot seal, I had a look at videos covering BMWs and came across this video on replacing a door seal, it looks like a straightforward push fit.

Yes me too.

Boot seal fitted - piece of cake - never fitted a mini boot seal before so didn't want to damage it - just a push fit and then pull the rubber on the inner side, which seats the seal over the interior trim.

I am going to run the fog test again and see if the leak is fixed and make sure no other leaks.

The hazards have only kicked off once on their own so far, hopefully the water is finally going!!

I will report back after fog test.
