Default Clutch Dying? :( - 13th November 2014, 05:17 PM

Hi All,

Just wondered if anyone can help me diagnose some symptoms which make me think it's time for a new clutch:

- Notchy gear changes
- Trouble going back into first after stopping
- When It does go back into first I can hear / feel a small thud
- Clutch engagement not positive (when it bites it feels like it then takes a while to fully engage.
- Quite a bit of play in the gearbox (side to side).

Car: 2002 Cooper S R53 - 89,000 miles.

Also, is this a good clutch / flywheel to get?

And if you're bored check out my car in my quick video I did, 720p works the best for some reason...

Thanks guys!

Sounds more gearbox/gear selection related than clutch to me. If a clutch is faulty it slips - the play in gear lever is nothing to do with the clutch but again would point to gearbox...

If the slave/master cyclinders aren't working properly then you can get issues selecting gears but that's not a clutch issue, that's an issue with the slave/master....

Thanks for the reply.

Another thing to point out is that everything feels much better when the car is cold. If I have been sat in traffic for a while the clutch / gearbox feels horrible and the pedal gets notchy...

If it doesn't feel right to you its probably best to get it in a garage. Either that or give lohen/1320 a call to ask them what they think or to book it in with them...
