Default Am I getting ripped off? - 21st September 2016, 10:24 PM

Hi there everyone,

I have a Mini Cooper s 2005 on 100,000 miles.

I had a bad rattle from my engine which I presumed meant the cam chain tensioner needed doing.

I took it to a local garage and they said they wouldn't just change the tensioner as the whole chain could fall apart if the guides are broken.

I agreed that they change the full cam chain kit for a price of 420.

They had it for a couple of days and then rang me and said that they couldn't get the crank pulley off so they were going to have to cut it off and fit a new one.

They said the part would be 240 and it could take 30 minutes or 2 hours depending on how difficult it is.

There labour cost is 40 per hour so I expected a bill of 740 at the most.

They rang to say that it took 8 hours for them to remove the pulley and that it would be 1030!!

I haven't paid as yet as I complained and the manager said he was going to think about it and call me back in the morning.

Now I'm no mechanic but this price seems ridiculous! Surely it's not my fault they couldn't get the pulley off

Does anyone have any thoughts?

Many Thanks, Adam

I'm sure Karl will step up with a solid view, but I don't see why the crankshaft pulley needs to come off for a tensioner change, unless it has also failed?

Sounds like they are trying to change the entire chain assembly which would include the sprocket on the crank, which means pulley off and oil pump off.

Hi there, they said they weren't willing to just change the tensioner as they suspected that the whole chain assembly would fall apart so I did agree that they change the full kit at a cost of 420 which has jumped to 1030 because they couldn't get the pulley off which seems like a crazy price.

This is a difficult one, and it depends whether the price they gave you was a quote or an estimate. Of course they will now tell you that it was only an estimate.

Point out to them that they told you it would take between 1/2 hour and 2 hours, and there is a big difference between that and 8 hours. Tell them that you would never have agreed to the job if you had known that is was going to take 8 hours, and you only agreed to it on the understanding that it would take 2 hours at the most. You might have been prepared to pay for another hour or so, but not 8 hours.

The fact that the manager said that he would think about it might be an indication that they are trying it on to see if they can get away with it.

Good luck.

Extensive mods to my Hyper Blue Cooper S Convertible:
Magic Tree air freshener; Road map moved from back of driver's seat to glove box; FUN plates; SmartTOP roof control; Chrome mirrors; Chrome bonnet scoop; Chrome boot handle and hinges; Chrome spotlights; Chrome air vents; Chrome door buttons; Chrome number plate surrounds; Chrome instruments and switches; Chrome gear knob and handbrake grip; Chrome pen in glove box; Chrome dust caps on front wheels (not sure about the back wheels - don't want to overdo it)
to dechroming. Keep it Chrome and Classy

If it has taken them 8 hours to remove a pulley then they are a pretty pathetic bunch tbh. Yes they can be an absolute pig, but 2 hours should have been enough time to get it done, have a cup of tea, and take a dump.

Hi Melvyn,

Yes I'll put that to them and see what they say thanks.

Cheers Karl that's what I thought. So do you reckon even if they had to cut it off then it still shouldn't have taken any longer than 2 hours?

Many Thanks, Adam

Tell them that by not calling you after exceeding the two hours they can't just charge whatever they want. It's simple. If something goes extra I would expect a call and then it's up to you to authorise it or tell them to stop and you'll tow it out 👍

Cut it off, fit new damped one, still have lots of change

How did 8 hours occur, did they work through the night, or nothing else in to book time against
