Default tcbw's British Racing Brown - 7th August 2014, 10:20 AM

This is not so much a project thread as a current status thread. Several wheels and plenty of vinyl have come and gone... I call my S "British Racing Brown" because I live at the end of a gravel road and it's either dusty or dirty with several layers of crap/ice over the dark grey.

The S came to Finland as a private import from Genoa, Italy, one year old with less than 10,000km; it had come from the factory with Chili pack, S spokes, Pirelli Euforias, DSC, PDC and the big glass sunroof. Those options cost me a lot of money in car tax ... I could have lived without the park distance control (or reversing beepers) and the sunroof, which I barely use. The first thing I did, once I'd got home from picking up the car in Copenhagen, was get it inspected, registered and insured, and then sort out a set of winter wheels/Nokian tyres and a DEFA engine block heater. Then I sold the S spokes and Pirellis for EUR 300 and ventured on line.

Anyway, the obligatory list of modifications to my Dark Silver/Black BMW MINI Cooper S 2006 ("facelift" built March 2006). Stock spec includes the OEM LSD with the 6 speed Getrag gearbox, DSCIII, half leather/red cloth seats, park distance control (huh?) and panoramic sunroof (oh well):

Maintenance? I've had the car serviced annually, although I only do about 11,000km a year. I've replaced the gearbox oil with Motul, and have a fresh OEM fuel filter. I change the auxiliary Gates belt every two years, and carry a spare around with me (you never know). I've replaced one fog light (cracked by a stone) and the rear boot handle (water ingress and rust due to stupid design), and I think I'm on the third windscreen.

I plan to get the car wrapped, instead of resprayed. A nice dark non metallic Jaguar BRG green should look good with the black roof and either red or yellow rims...

Although its probably only 7-8 weeks to winter tyre time, I've just ordered a set of amusingly named Bridgestone Potenza Adrenalin RE 002s in 205/50-16 as my replacement summer road tyres (as I have the 17" OZs and Yokohama Advan Neova AD08s for track days).

I've been idly looking for something good to run of a standard like the Continental SportContact 5, Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2, Michelin Pilot Sport 3, or maybe the Uniroyal RainSport3, and the Nokian Hakka Black, but nothing has jumped out at me, until I saw these and did some reading. And the guys from MightyCarMods - MOOG and Marty - seem to rate them.

I wasn't sure about the new RainSport3s, as the sidewalls still seem to be a bit soft, but these new Bridgestones seem to prioritise steering feel and have a pretty stiff sidewall - important for a 50 section tyre.

Anyway, subject to Camskill, I hope it'll be money well spent (and they came in fractionally cheaper than the RainSport3s with delivery). I really can't run the old RainSport2s any more...
