Since I purchased my 2011 MC R56 LCi in February, I have kept a strict record of my fuel consumption with the help of the iPhone app "Road Trip". After every fill up the app has calculated that I am getting in the region of 38/40 mpg. After my last fill up I purchased a K&N air filter. From the time of the installation, I have tried to drive conservatively to see if the filter made any difference to the fuel consumption as claimed by the manufacturers.

Today when I filled up and entered the new data into my app, it returned a reading of over 62 mpg. I have checked my figures and am convinced that I have made no errors. Is this improved consumption realistic or have I missed something? I have also noticed a more lively vehicle which responds quicker.

I appreciate that I need to have a few more fill ups to compare before I get too excited. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

I think the app is ok as I am running another completely different iphone app at the same time and both give identical results.

If you take the air filter out completely and replace it with a football sock stretched over the intake you should see between 80-90mpg using your app.

Wow - Where do I get a football sock from?

Extensive mods to my Hyper Blue Cooper S Convertible:
Magic Tree air freshener; Road map moved from back of driver's seat to glove box; FUN plates; SmartTOP roof control; Chrome mirrors; Chrome bonnet scoop; Chrome boot handle and hinges; Chrome spotlights; Chrome air vents; Chrome door buttons; Chrome number plate surrounds; Chrome instruments and switches; Chrome gear knob and handbrake grip; Chrome pen in glove box; Chrome dust caps on front wheels (not sure about the back wheels - don't want to overdo it)
to dechroming. Keep it Chrome and Classy

Thank you all for your input, especially to KarlW11R50 & Melvyn. It really is nice to find two intelligent and knowledgeable members here on the group. Fortunately, I do have an old football sock so I will remove my new K&N filter and do as you say, and look forward to 80-90mpg. Many thanks for the tip!!

According to the (probably not that accurate) OBC on my JCW R55 I get 28mpg. No idea how people get 40mpg and still enjoy driving their car

According to my (very accurate) full/empty tank - odometer- calculator I get a consistent 26mpg in my R56 S
Although if I'm "properly enjoying " it I get much less
