G1.202 Cooper S Paceman - 9th July 2017, 07:42 PM

Hi
I'm in the process of buying a 2013 cooper S paceman which has FMSH (serviced last week), and has done 28K with 1 owner

I'm 99% set on this car but having heard the stories of timing chain problems, clutch problems and valve coking issues i'm hoping owners can give me piece of mind by letting me know how reliable these cars really are.
were these problems connected to the earlier S models or are they ongoing with the paceman (do these use the later engine - is it improved?)

Are there any other potential problems i should check for before commiting?

The car has 1 years TLC remaining - does this include the Mini warranty or just the next service free?

The car is from a garage (not main dealer) so will come with a full RAC approved warranty so hoping any issues will be covered

Thanks

With the Paceman sharing the same engine as Countryman you should be ok opting for a 2013 model. The earlier Cooper S models did suffer with issues relating to power loss, water pump, dodgy fuel lines and rust (!) which should have been all covered by a recall/warranty. The clutch problem is linked for 4x4 variants and as for coking best to use high premium fuels to reduce. On the TLC, as the second service has been completed this will probably be the end of the TLC cover for you but you can extend it. TLC only covers servicing, oil and brake fluid replacement, the warranty would have ended after three years. Enjoy your Paceman!

Thanks for the info
The dealer said the TLC is for 5 years/ 50000 miles so finishes next July when the car is 5 years old - not sure if the last service is free (do they have 1 every 12 months or when computer says so?)
If the engine sounds quiet on cold start then i assume the chain will be ok? i only do 80 miles a week so mileage isn't a problem and i'd get the oil + filter changed at 6 months just for piece of mind.
Looking at forums it seems the thermostat is still an ongoing problem on the S models or is this on the earlier engines (reports of parts on back order for weeks/ months)?

Typically you tend to get two services based on the computer which prompts at either every 20k miles or after two years. The earlier models were troublesome, I can remember the number of issues/recalls on my 2011 Countryman with very little going wrong on my 2013 Countryman. Hopefully, the thermostat would have been resolved with the age of your Paceman.

Sorry to high jack/ jump in ZF44.... our 2011 CM has developed a rattle that sounds like a drive belt pulley and the cooling fan always seems to be on after shut down these days.... I have mini warranty.... do I need to investigate the thermostat or timing chain while I'm covered? Runs fine and is at 42k miles but has got noisier of late. Just want to meet any trouble half way while I still have warranty.

Hope the OP enjoys the new car.

R60 Cooper S auto, Pure red, chilli, media and light packs. Harman Kardon. Lots of mods to come.....

Rattle sounds more like the chain as a belt would make a squealing noise when slipping
The fan problem could be the thermostat or a sensor - as it's under warranty i'd get it booked in asap before it leads to a worse problem

I agree, best to get it checked out while it is still under warranty. Let us know how you get on.

Update - bought a 2015 Cooper hatch with the JCW bodykit instead
8000 miles, red/ black roof/ wheels/ mirrors, pepper pack, JCW steering wheel, anthracite headlining and some other bits

Picked it up yesterday and spent the day with the DA starting the full detailing session

Very nice, congrats! At least you have the piece of mind with the manufacturer's warranty remaining.

Thanks, at least i have some comfort with the Mini warranty instead of the aftermarket and with the newer engine i haven't heard of timing chain problems
