Icon3 Apple Carplay retrofitable? - 14th October 2017, 05:54 PM

I read in the press that for 2018 model, MINI will be fitting Apple Carplay and Android (whatever it is called)
I wondered if this was going to be retrofitable? I do appreciate the 2018 models will have higher screen definition, but otherwise it's just a software update surely?

Any views or news most welcome

Itís already available on the current MY2018 Countrymans and Clubmans which also offers a touchscreen feature. I canít see any issues on receiving the feature through a software update and even though the presentation below uses a touchscreen it can be controlled used the touch pad too. But with any retrofits itís going to cost especially being a BMW product.

Thanks zf44. I certainly hope it can be fitted. As new versions of Apple iOS and Android operating systems come out, auto manufactures (and MINI and BMW in particular) need to keep their cars up to date to. Roll-on all providing over the air updates like Tesla (as long as you get a choice and can regress if there is a problem)

Default Apple Carplay retrofitable? - 16th October 2017, 08:16 AM

I've been in contact with a dealer and got the answer that it would require hardware and not only software update.

Only the hardware update if you prefer to have a touch screen. You should be fine if you have either the visual boost or media screens with the touch pad. A number of BMW owners have managed to download/install successfully the CarPlay software update but obviously at a cost.

It's very unlikely as Mini would prefer you to buy a new car. The industry often talk about how cars in the future will be able to be updated but they also talk about replacable panels to change the styling/colour of your car. Pipe dreams so far. I think easy cost effective updates will go the way of the Sony recorders that removed the adverts for you. Commercial interests will outweigh what is technically possible. Or maybe I am just a cynic.

Research Iíve done suggests that the BMW/Mini implementation of CarPlay uses a wireless (Wi-Fi) connection, apparently other manufacturers utilise cable only, I guess it is the hardware to support this that makes a retrofit difficult.

As a Countryman early adopter Iíll admit Iím a bit peeved that this element was updated so soon after the model release.

Otherwise Iím loving the car.

Good luck

After doing some more digging, the BMW gang are able to download with models built from March 2017 but you have to pay £235 (36 months only) for the privilege.
