Default K&N induction kit? - 29th October 2017, 07:27 AM

Morning all, I bought my R50 on Monday and doing a few jobs on it this week and some research Iíve found it seems to have an induction kit fitted.

The filter has damaged the underfelt on the bonnet though and Iíve been reading this morning that I no longer need an air filter but should service and oil the kit.

Can anyone give any advice please?

Cheers

Yes that cone filter is filthy!

This is now your air filter so it needs to be spotlessly clean. K&N do a filter cleaning kit, I have one but I’ve never used it. It comprises of a cleaner and an oil . I would be very careful if you use it as you do not want excess oil entering your intake.

It’s pretty poorly fitted as it shouldn’t be touching anything else in the engine bay particularly the sound proofing. The fact it is smothered by the bonnet lining will be reducing its efficiency hugely. It may be even less efficient than the oem air box!

I’d undo the jubilee clip and remove your cone. Get a hand brush and give it a proper going over. See how clean you can get it, it should be a deep purplely, pink. Once it’s clean try to tidy up the install by making sure there is clearance around the cone on all sides. The heat from the engine is bad enough for the efficiency of cones, but the dirt and smothering of yours will be really having an effect.

You should notice a nice improvement in induction noise once it’s clean!

Iím going to look for a shield too then to protect it from heat and probably replace the underfelt too

No worries at all..... Iíve fitted 3 of these (to other cars not a mini) and they are usually nicely designed in that they donít foul other parts or bonnet.... so hopefully there is something wrong with the original install and you can rectify it.

Maybe this isnít a kit for the r50? Maybe find the product number for your car, check out a new one on amazon, look at the pics and reviews and see if it differs from what you have fitted.

They usually sit in front of where the intake air enters so they get a good blast of clean air and not heat soaked from the engine.

But giving it a good clean will certainly improve things.... youíve made me go have a check what they offer for the r60 now! Not sure why I havenít looked before!

be very careful with the cleaner and oil amounts... don't over do it!

Does it sit in there without hitting the bonnet now?

can't see your latest attachments for some reason...
