Turns out it's Still rough idling and hard to start! Have already spent quite a lot of money and it's not even over... Sigh. They're going to check it once more sometime next week as the diagnostics guy has gone MIA so it's just been sitting here with no progress. I have some previous error codes but I'm not sure what it means? Losing hope!

Have you taken it to an actual MINI BMW dealer? Them codes don't look like MINI ones to me
Even an independent can't sometimes on the odd occasion fix what MINI BMW can (I'm talking from experience)

I wasted loads of money on a previous car taking it to garages except to the main dealer who managed to fix it straight away - I learnt a lesson

He thinks the plugs and camshaft sensor is fine and that it's either the valves or VVT pulley. Said the engine is taking in too much air at idle?

I haven't gone to BMW, just an indie bmw specialist but he's gone for another week or two somewhere. Really wish I did just to start with now! Thought I would be saving money haha nope..

These independents yes can be good value but seem to fix a number of things that don't need
fixing before sorting the actual issue out.

In my old car I had a engine management light on, independent garage changed 4 things and I got charged for them all being replaced but the light still came on. Gave up and took it to main dealer they sorted it in an hour.

I'm surprised when you say they have gone for a week or so ... great service - not
Considering diagnosics is one of the crutial parts of a garage and problem solving these days I'm surprised he has just gone missing, not sure how they are fixing any cars (correctly anyway) sounds like a shambles to me.

Get the car out of that garage, even ask for a partial refund and book it in with MINI

I think our diagnostics guy is going through some personal issues at the moment which is a shame and fair enough. Just odd that the garage wonít take a look at it themselves.. but Iíve been told the technician is the best around here so maybe they just think itís better if he looks at it again.

Fingers crossed it will be fixed under £1k because my goodness my bank account is weeping. Thanks again you guys, iíll post an update when theyíve taken a look at it again

Hey guys, itís finally fixed.
Took it back for diagnosis, found out the vanos was stuck in a certain position and wasnít able to go back which was why it was rough idling but driving okay ish. Took it back to the garage who changed the vanos... and the thermostat housing which cracked and caused steam to come out the bonnet on the same day. Cherry on top.

He went for a test drive and it was still misfiring.. so he changed coils and cleaned the solenoid valve and that finally fixed it.
A part of me thinks it was just the coil pack and solenoid valve all along but ah well... Just glad to have it back on the road. Hope no one else goes through this ordeal but if you do, definitely check the simple things yourself first before spending big bux!

Good news! Money spent but I guess the car is running better than ever before now?

Solenoid valve seems to be a fairly common issue in the R series models, hopefully you will have no more problems and lots more MINI adventures now!
