Default Hard start, stalling.. - 29th January 2018, 07:00 AM

Hey guys. Having a bit of a problem with my 09 Mini Cooper S R57.

It started with a very sudden idle misfire. Or what I think is a misfire.. the whole car shakes on idle, rhythmic pumping sound from he exhaust and RPM needle goes up and down itself.

Now I’m having trouble starting and it keeps stalling at traffic lights.
My mechanic serviced the car and now he thinks the only issue left is the oxygen sensor (bank 1 sensor 1) which is he fitting soon.

It’s still misfiring on idle, the whole car shakes and has lost a lot of power. Runs surprisingly ok-ish around 20-30mph but it definitely stutters a lot.

Could it really be just the sensor or is there something more sinister going on?

Any help at all would be appreciated!

I once had a 07 Cooper that had irractic idle especially when cold turned out to be the solenoid sensor that needed replacing

Had o2 sensor replaced. It's now running slightly smoother but still rough idling and stalling at low speed. No errors coming up. Is there a possibility a valve has burned out? Any help at all would be really appreciated

Oops my post should have said solenoid valve not sensor*

I vaguely remember the BMW service place say it had rusted or
something.

Have you checked spark plugs? Could be a fuel injector issue ? Faulty Throttle Position Sensor?

If your spending loads trying to get your mechanic to find out what it is just
take it to MINI yes it will cost a bit to get them to look but they will tell
you exactly what it is and you can go away get it fixed or get them to do it.
I spent loads once with a duff mechanic when the main dealer solved problem straight away

Thank you for replying again! So my main mechanic can't figure out what's wrong. He advised to take it to his friend's garage (spoke with him over the phone and he thinks it's dirt or buildup on valves?) I was going to take it to him but my car started making a burning smell in traffic last night so I just took it to the nearest garage. They phoned earlier saying they tried to enter the diagnostic tool and could only get so far... That I'd have to see a BMW or German car specialist? Is this normal or am I being fobbed off? What a nightmare!

onto bmw ista diagnostics and go from there, first thoughts, compression test, if all good I would lean towards timing chain & vanos solenoid valve (especially if there was an 02 lanbda sensor error) and a walnut decoke. If your mileage is north of 70K i would be putting a bmw chain kit on as a matter of good practice and engine health.
The garage you last left car to, I respect, they have not the ability to repair, put their hands up and told you who to see, they could have dicked about for days, charged a fortune and not fixed the issue.

Take it to MINI get a correct diagnosis then you can take it elsewhere for the part to be fitted if you think MINI are too expensive

It's not worth throwing cash at all these other mechanics who don't know what's wrong with it

Hey guys, Thank you both for your help. Was such a headache but I eventually went to a BMW diagnostic place and they've found that it's actually the timing chain... Expensive but at least it's found now, finally!

How much was it? Did you get BMW to fit and supply the part ?
