Default 48 Hour Road Test - 13th November 2017, 09:21 PM

MINI UK are advertising widely on a 48 hour test drive with the Countryman. After years of driving diesels, I’m going to try out the Countryman Hybrid to see how it compares. More details and booking request below:

Yes... I’m picking one up tomorrow so see what it’s like.

I look forward to your thoughts ZF. I will post mine... I’m comparing to our N18 MCS and will drive the new 2.0 s before having the PHEV for a day or 2. Will be interesting!

I decided not to go ahead with it after being told the petrol engine only charges the battery up to 10% if you donít plug it in. With no secure charging points both at home and work itís going to be more diesels MINIs for us in the future. Itís a shame they donít have battery packs which provide the same range (300 miles +) on a single charge as the Teslas.

Totally agree. Iím sure it will happen as things progress and Iím sure I will come to the same conclusion as you.... although Iím hoping the battery will be able to get my wife to work & back with a charge at home overnight. We have power on the drive so that would work.

I will do the journey this afternoon to see.... Iím hoping that the twin power mode (auto) will decide to use mainly battery power for that usage.

If however, the tiny fuel tank and the battery canít get through the week then we may as well stay in the MCS. No point in a diesel for us as itís only about 9 miles each way and the return trip is 35-40 mins so heavy traffic.

Our round trip commute is typically 40 miles a day but we are faced with travelling upto 350 miles to visit our main offices so it won’t work for us unfortunately. We’ve covered 18k miles in the past year which means sticking with diesel but it will be interesting to see you manage with it.

We would of loved the phev but needed a tow bar so it was out for use . We wanted to go back to petrol as the wife works 3 miles away . We have done a 1000 miles in the 1.5 petrol and it is great . If you don't do a lot of miles give one a go before going up to the S . We have had 1.6 petrols before but this is way better. Wife is getting 31 mpg all week even in this cold weather waiting for the heated screen to defrost and only doing 3 miles each way . I have used it on a run about 30 mile each way and it was showing 45 mpg . It pulls really well if you haven't driven one have a go before buying another model . I am going to put a caravan on it in the spring so will update on how it goes .

Our 1.6 gets 31 when my wife uses it daily less if I drive, so I’m pretty happy with that for the performance it gives.

The PHEV is a really really lovely drive. So impressed with it. The 2 litre was also a lovely ride.

The ride is the most improved thing over our 1.6.... both demos were on runflats and honestly I could not tell. The damping is massively improved.

So many modes and displays and toys to get your head around but a direct comparison journey we did yesterday was 55 mpg. I was not driving at all economically and had it in sport most of the time.... I think my wife would be able to get way more.

The 22 mile round trip did see the battery down to 10% by the end so a good amount of battery power was used over the 22 miles.

Once I have the costs in front of me I will be able to weigh up if it’s worthwhile changing but very very impressed with it.

55mpg is impressive, we average between 45 to 52mpg. On ride and handling, thatís what I like about on BMW/MINI with their ongoing product development. All three of our Countrymans handled in a different way with our latest being more economical, better build quality and handling.

very impressed with the SE but I don't think it will be an order from me..... Mini don't offer the same contributions towards the hybrid as they do the petrols so even with the government 2.5k it is 100 a month more at least....

Also i'm beginning to think a year or 2 will see the hybrid offer some proper range on full electric as it develops. Maybe a new 2 litre S until the hybrid gets up to speed so to speak!
