Default Impossible to get rear bulb out to change it! - 22nd October 2013, 02:07 PM

A tail light bulb has gone on my R56 on the nearside, I've tried to get the old one one but apart from removing a large amount of skin from my knuckles have had no joy! It just doesn't want to untwist. The off side bulb comes out fine, access is worse on the nearside though.

Any ideas?

That's a good idea, can't see me managing it otherwise!

Just unclip the chrome trim it will reveal 3 screws that hold the light in

Should the light then pop out fairly easily?

Had the brake light go on my r56,I got the light that denotes a bulb is out..the day I came round to change it I noticed the dash light no longer comes on and the bulb is now working (and still is) I had a talk with Andy at mini tech spares and he said on a few cars the connector can short and throw a light out...just make sure you check the bulb to make sure it's blown,if not then you'll need a rear cluster ..

Yes, very easily.

You may need to unclip the wiring plug to make the process even simpler.

Trying to get access via the small access holes in the boot is not recommended.

That access hole in the boot is ridiculous!! Ruined my hand trying to undo it, almost seems like the bulb carrier has seized in there as the other side undos easily.

Should I change both sides at once? Bulb is definitely out!

Once you have seen how ridiculously easy it is to remove the whole light assembly then you will not need to worry about doing it in the future.

To unclip the chrome ring it is best to use a plastic trim removal tool (a screwdriver heavily taped up to guard sharp edges will suffice, but only in extremis). Start at an inside top corner and lever the trim ring up and away from the light fitting. Once you hear it pop move to the other corner top corner. At this stage the ring will be almost ready to fall out.

To occupy time during my night shift I removed the light cluster from unscrewing it from the outside- far far easier way to do it!

Only snag was the bulb still wouldn't come out!! Some idiot who changed it before jammed it in and screwed it the wrong way. After much fiddling I eventually undid it and swapped out the bulb. On plugging it back in it initially didnt illuminate however after jiggling the bulb it lit up. I think the mounting in the light cluster is damaged but I'll see how it goes, been fine for the last 2.5 years! If it plays up again ill have to swap out the whole unit.

Thanks everyone for your help
