Default MP3 tags on USB drive - 5th November 2013, 09:13 PM

OK, so finally got the Bluetooth and USB programmed in, and now trying to get my MP3s onto a USB stick and playing properly in the car.

In my 530d, files are stored on a USB key in a simple folder structure:

Each MP3 file has ID3v2 tags set that contain Album Name, Artist Name, Track, Track Artist and Track Number information as well as embedded album art within each file as can be seen in my Windows Explorer screenshot here:

Now, in the BMW, the albums show up in the list if I search for albums, and tracks are played in the order that they are set according to the ID3v2 tags - in my opinion, all appears and plays as it should.

In the Mini however, I can view a directory listing fine as per below:

However, I cannot select Albums from the options:

If I simply browse through the directory option, the music just plays in alphabetical filename order rather than what has been determined by the ID3v2 tags:

I've tried changing from ID3v2 to ID3v1 tags, but it's still the same. I really want to be able to sort my music by Album or Song or Artist, and therefore have the music played back in the order determined by the tags rather than the filename order, but these options are greyed out and cannot be selected. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks

I have not yet got round to trying a USB stick. I will try this on my car and see whether I get the same results as you.

I can search on albums, but having simply exported from my iTunes library I cannot play them! I don't really want to change the format. At least you encouraged me to try the USB approach. I will stick with the iPod.

Works fine in my Dooper (w/Visual Boost).
I copied from the root of "iTunes Library" to the root of the USB drive (thus making the Artist folders the top level)

Files purchased from iTunes Store don't show, so in iTunes, click "Create MP3 Version" then delete the original.

Albums with unusual characters, such as & (IE: Codes & Keys), also screw up.

Thanks for the info. I don't use iTunes (I'm one of those Apple haters!), but it's interesting that it does work in MP3 format, so it must just be a case of getting the folder structure and tags correct.

Any chance you can send me a screenshot of your windows explorer window showing how the files are laid out on the USB stick?

Thanks

Are you sure it's not a case of the stereo refusing to play your choice in music?

Can't do a screen shot, but imagine;
<root> -> Artist -> Album -> filename.mp3

All tagged up correctly.

Cheeky ba$tard!! That Swedish House Mafia album is fantastic!

Thanks. I'll give that file format a go. Are your tags ID3v1 or ID3v2 ?
