Default Y Cable or Snap in or Bluetooth - 3rd December 2013, 09:10 AM

Hi all

Recently got a 63 plate Cooper SD with the Nav system and full media pack - ie there should be a fair amount of connectivity. Only problem is I have an iphone 5, and from what I can tell Apple haven't been kind enough to share how the (not very) new lightning interface works with BMW/Mini..

I currently use the current issue y cable with an ipod - works a treat with the album art showing on screen etc - but the sound quality doesn't seem to be as good as when I use bluetooth (I would've expected this to be the other way around!).

Also currently have the phone connected via bluetooth but then the battery doesn't get charged.. I tried using a 30 pin to lightning adapter but this didn't work well at all.

What I want to know is, when the various adapters are released which one works best with Mini media systems? For those who have iphone 4's what do you use and does it work well?

Would be keen to hear peoples thoughts & experiences

Thanks in advance!

You say the lightning adapter doesn't work well - why? Is it genuine? As lots of us are using it that way with no probs. The snap in there isn't a full media one yet I belive. I found the Bluetooth music streaming to not b as good as the y cable

Thanks

It's an official Apple adapter, but only charges and plays music - other media functionality doesn't work (like the ipod interface being shown on the screen). And I haven't been able to get mini connected to work through it yet - will try and have another play with it tonight though..

Re the bluetooth vs y cable for audio, I'll check that my ipod is storing music at the highest bitrate - that's the only reason I can think of that would make the sound quality worse than bluetooth.

Official 'Apple' adaptor? I believe you need the OEM MINI adaptor for it to work fully as it has some software widget built into it

I have the BMW Mini Y cable with the 30 pin connector, which I then use an Apple 30 pin to lightning adapter with. The lightning version of the OEM Mini adapter hasn't been released yet (I believe)..

My 5c charges, plays music and does Connected using the mini Y lead and Apple adaptor. The Plug in link doesn't work though.

Same as Falmouthboy - using the Mini Y cable with an Apple 30pin to Lightning adapter - all Connected seems to work fine, phone (5S) charges and all works except 'Plug In' which is a pain cos the iPod interface is utter crap. '13 plate SD, all the toys. Just plugs in and works.

Ok, my bad.. Seems like I ****ed something up when I first tried using the adapter. Can now get the same functionality as you guys. Don't get plug in but the album artwork on the screen is pretty funky.

Also weirdly, the sound quality using my iPhone is tonnes better than using my iPod.. Must have set the iPod up with low quality music or something.

Never mind, alls well that ends well - thanks for your help guys!!
