Default Windscreen Crack - 19th May 2013, 06:55 AM

Around the edges of the screen, particularly the black bits, it only takes the smallest pin **** of a stone chip to set off a crack. A combination of stress point and heat build up from the sun on the black I was told. We had a new screen fitted to the Coupe by Autoglass last week. They seem to have done a good job and unlike the screen they replaced on our 1 Series in 2011, which was a Shatterpruf pattern screen, this was at least the same make as the other glass, albeit without the mini logo. I failed in my battle to get an original mini screen, Autoglass were happy to supply one, but the insurer, More Than, flat refused to play ball. Beware that from experience with the 1 Series, that if they fit a Shatterpruf pattern screen and you have auto wipers they may not function properly. If this happens you need to press them to pay for them to be re calibrated by a dealer or specialist with Autologic software.

As said, the quality of the job often boils down to the fitter and their skill/experience with your car. However, Autoglass does have the good 'kit' to give them a head start.

Hmmm, the fitter did say that mine was a stress crack more then a stone chip. Sounds like everyone has a different experience depended on company and fitter. But as you say, Autoglass do have better kit then National Windscreens did.

How does one remove the A-pillar trim? Is it easy?

I've got some greasy fingermarks on mine, and they won't clean off. I think they must be on the inside.

I think the windscreen was replaced by a previous owner.

Extensive mods to my Hyper Blue Cooper S Convertible:
Magic Tree air freshener; Road map moved from back of driver's seat to glove box; FUN plates; SmartTOP roof control; Chrome mirrors; Chrome bonnet scoop; Chrome boot handle and hinges; Chrome spotlights; Chrome air vents; Chrome door buttons; Chrome number plate surrounds; Chrome instruments and switches; Chrome gear knob and handbrake grip; Chrome pen in glove box; Chrome dust caps on front wheels (not sure about the back wheels - don't want to overdo it)
to dechroming. Keep it Chrome and Classy

Yah I've thoroughly inspected mine no stone chip and it happened in mid January, to be honest, in Canada...I'm just going to leave it until my motor vehicle inspection is due and have it replaced then

Hi Melvyn,

I followed this to inspect the work, just be careful that you don't snap it when removing. Make sure you start from the inside and not the outside, and no tools are required to pull it off, after removing the screws.

Default Unexplained cracks.... - 28th May 2013, 01:35 PM

Been Goggling all afternoon as I have a 2nd unexplained crack in my Sept 2012 Mini JCW front windscreen. 1st one was January this year; the insurance company replaced it (via Autoglass) with an original Mini windscreen but I did say to the fitter that the crack appeared odd. I didnít remember a stone coming at me and the crack was vertical from the roof (near rearview mirror) then went horizontal towards toe drivers side. Nah said the fitter itís definitely a chip. Roll on a few months and the same crack has appeared again. Vertical from the roof (near the rear view mirror) but this time horizontal towards the passengerís side. This time however I went back to the dealers (last week). They huffed and puffed a bit but they called this morning to say come on back down for their warranty manager to have a look. The long and the short is that a windscreen should not just develop a crack; and two within 5 months and both almost identical says to me that something is wrongÖ..will let you know how I get on!!

Default Windscreen Crack - 28th May 2013, 05:07 PM

Kev, I feel your pain - MoreThan in our case. I let them know I wasn't happy and as our other cars renewal comes up at the end of the week I have renewed with someone else. When asked why I wasn't renewing with them I told them. To be honest, if it was my 6 year old Volvo 'workhorse' I wouldn't mind and accept a pattern screen as reasonable, but in a 18 month old car I do find it unacceptable. The only consolation was that it was at least a screen the same make as the original, just no mini logo. I guess that's because a Coupe is sufficiently new and low volume to make it worthwhile them getting a pattern screen made yet.
