Default R53 Cooper S cold rattle HELP - 15th March 2014, 11:56 PM

[QUOTE=edwardtobia;97163]That could be your crank pulley and/or belt tensioner damper failing, will be more n noticeable at higher revs due to those components being under more strain...

Is there a simple way to check these? It's so tight down that side of the engine I can barely get a finger in and can't see anything. Through the wheel arch?

Default R53 Cooper S cold rattle HELP - 17th March 2014, 01:25 AM

I think I'm going to resort to petrol and matches soon .... New problem - stopped the car today and got out to see the drip drip drip of coolant coming from under my rad. I've done a bit of googling and the dampener came up again. Does this add up? I suppose no water pump (if the belts not driving it) means overheating and pop! How much am I looking at for a dampener change?

Default R53 Cooper S cold rattle HELP - 20th March 2014, 07:41 PM

260 lighter and the leak has been fixed with a new radiator. I kinda wish i'd done the work myself and saved 200 but i suppose having experts looking over the engine is worth paying a premium for.
The guys at Mad4MINI took it out for a spin and didn't see, hear or feel anything worrying so that's put my mind at rest.
I still hear the wet fart rattle at full throttle above 4000rpm but I'm now just going to think of it as the car's natural sound!
Next - one ball mod!
Thanks to everyone for your input.

Could actually be your timing chain. Happened on a friends after he changed the timing chain tensioner!
