MINI Icon Black Warning Light - Brakes Pads/Brake Fluid? - 14th September 2015, 08:06 AM

Morning guys!

Urgent help needed please!!!

I was driving back from Farnham to Banbury yesterday on the M25 and I got the lights shown attached pop up on the car, and they are still there today. They stay red by the way.

Looking in the manual and online it seems to point to a brake issue but I can’t distinguish what the actual problem is? The brakes appear to be functioning fine but I'm really concerned as to what this means? To add to this as well, the cruise control seems to have ceased working at the same time – I was actually using it on the motorway and then the lights popped up and the cruise control now isn’t working?

My car is a 2011 plate Cooper D, bought back on June 19th with 25500 on the clock.
I also have been getting warnings for a service too, which now shows as -100 miles. The car has the Mini TLC until Feb 2016 but I dont know if the brake issue would be covered or if I should go back to the garage I bought it from as the 3month warranty with them runs out on Saturday?!?

HELP!!!!

Thanks,
Giles.

Having spoken with Mini at lunch, the combination of the car asking for a service a few weeks ago which is now at '-90', along with the brake warning lights mean that either discs/pads need doing OR both?

I've spoken with the garage I got it from who tell me that its not covered under their warranty as its 'wear and tear' (shouldn't these have been checked however?!) but if I buy the parts they will fit them for free?

Mini have said I need to go in to them as I have never been to the garage before so they can read the key etc, but that pads/discs would not be covered under TLC anyway.

I'm a little p!ssed off if I'm honest ...

Which light are you referring to?
The one at the top looks like just the handbrake applied light to me.
And the others at the bottom are just because it's overdue a service?

They're right, brakes aren't covered by TLC AFAIK.
And I doubt they'll fit them for free.

To be fair, you bought the car 3 months ago, and while the pads were low they were adequate.

I'm referring to both lights. The handbrake was not applied when I took this photo and the (!) remains on whilst driving.
The 'car on a ramp' flashes up when I start the car as well?

It wasn't Mini who said they would fit them for free - the garage I got the car from said if I buy the pads etc then they would fit them for free, as good will.

I suppose I'm just surprised that it was given an MOT if the pads were that low - im not excessive with the brakes, and have done about 3500 miles in three months.

Perhaps it's just bad luck on my part ...

Any suggestions on where best to get quotes on parts?

Thanks.

Thanks for the responses guys ...

I'm looking on EuroCarParts TexTar brake pads which are 77.18. The Pagid ones are cheaper still (67.86) actually so may go for those instead?

As much as I want to keep the history on the car through Mini dealerships/garages taking a look around tells me I'm looking at around 150 fitted for fronts and same for back so financially that makes no sense to me.

Does the garage have to manually correct the warning lights or will the car do that of its own accord?

You'll probably need a brake wear sensor too - that will correct the warning light. However, the brake pad wear usage (miles) will need resetting - there's a thread on hear that tells you how to do that without a trip to the dealers.

Thanks for the info - I'll grab a couple of sensors too. A bit of an open question here I guess but I hope I'll be okay to leave it until after the 25th (when I get paid). I'm still waiting to hear back from the garage that I bought the Mini from as to when they can fit it in too

This has happened to me. Does anyone know why the cruise control would stop working?
